Polishing Explained & FAQ

Understanding the variables that affect your polishing results.

Why does Paint Hardness matter so much?

Paint hardness, or the resistance of the clear coat to being abraded, is a critical factor. Hard paints (like on many German cars) require more aggressive pad/compound combinations and more machine passes to remove defects, significantly increasing the time. Soft paints (common on Japanese cars) correct quickly but can be prone to micro-marring, requiring finer finishing steps.

How does Skill Level change the estimate?

Efficiency in motion. A Professional Detailer uses economical movements, maintains consistent pressure, and knows exactly when a section is corrected, minimizing wasted time. A Beginner may make more passes than necessary or work less systematically, which is why the calculator adds a time buffer.

When should I use a Wool Pad vs. a Foam Pad?

Wool Pads are for heavy cutting. Their natural fibers are more aggressive, making them ideal for removing heavy defects on hard paints. Always follow a wool pad with foam pads to refine the finish.
Foam Pads come in various densities (cutting, polishing, finishing). They are the workhorse for most jobs, from medium defect removal to creating a high-gloss, haze-free final finish.
